Origin
Puttabong refers to the premium site of the Tukvar plantation. Founded in 1852, Puttabong is one of the oldest tea plantations in the Darjeeling district. Since 1967, the garden has been a member of the renowned Jay Shree Tea Ltd. to which numerous premium plantations belong. The fields extend over a length of 22 km along the west bank of the Rangeet River about 9 km northeast of Darjeeling Town in the northernmost valley of Darjeeling District. At an altitude of almost 2,000 metres above sea level, the best Thea chammelia sinensis bushes in the world grow on 436 hectares. Every year, 250 tonnes of tea are harvested and produced here. Thanks to the favourable climatic conditions in the small valley and modern irrigation systems, harvesting begins very early in the year in Puttabong. Especially the early flying teas and first flushes from Puttabong delight Darjeeling fans all over the world.
Sustainability
Puttabong has been certified organic since 2001 - long before the big trend. At the moment, the company is striving for Fair Trade certification. The working and living conditions of the pickers have improved greatly in recent years. Almost all workers live on the plantation in small but modern houses. A primary and a high school are available free of charge for the children. In addition, Jay Shree Ltd. provides a hospital with free medical care.
