The date is one of the oldest cultivated plants of mankind. Originating in Mesopotamia, the date palm made its way to all the desert countries of the Middle East, Arabia and Africa a good 5,000 years ago. Date palms can live up to 100 years and bear fruit from the eighth year. The name "date" is borrowed from Arabic and means "finger".
